Support for your learning

Wherever your home centre, you will have access to the following:

Personal and Careers Advice

If you need confidential advice and information on matters such as health, accommodation, grants and benefits or other personal issues, Personal Advisers of the Connexions Service can provide support both in your home centre and in ‘One Stop Shops’ . When you need information about what to do when you finish your course, Careers Specialist Personal Advisers provide: independent and impartial advice and guidance, accurate and up to date information on further and higher education, local training opportunities and current jobs either in your home base or at Westminster Connexions ( tel. 020 7266 8230 ).

Tutorial Support

You will have a tutor to monitor and support your learning. The tutor will explain your ‘ home centre’ rules, your learning programme, assessments, examinations and other aspects of your course, and will then keep a caring eye on your overall progress and attendance. You will also have group sessions, on topics such as study skills or opportunities beyond the sixth form, to broaden your learning.

Help with HE Applications

All centres have staff who can help you with Curriculum Vitae, application forms, UCAS applications and interviews, and who know a great deal about Higher Education courses. In addition, because we are in Central London, local universities are funded to provide mentoring, master classes, summer schools and other activities to help prepare you for Higher Education.

Disablity or Specific Learning Difficulties Support

If you have a disability or specific learning difficulty and require additional support to undertake and complete your course, there are specialist staff in the Partnership and resources available to help you.

Education Maintenance Allowance (EMA)

EMAs are weekly payments worth up to £30 if you continue in further education and your annual household income is £30,000 or less. These payments are for travel and study costs. In addition, there are bonuses of £ 100 payable if you make good progress with your learning and attend well. For more information, pick up an application form from your school or Connexions PA, or phone the free helpline (tel. 0808 1016 219) as soon as possible.

Language and Other Support

If you need help to study in English, we can give you an English Language assessment and then advise you on the best course to meet your needs. Specialist ESOL courses – of which several centres have a wide range – give a great deal of support. However, the Partnership also supplies language support for mainstream courses, including A levels, in a number of its centres. Communication and Numeracy support are also provided, sometimes through GCSE English and Maths retakes, if you want to improve your skills in these areas. Your tutor will advise you.
